The Importance Of Water; Health Pillar 1

Water intake is a huge factor when it comes to our health & vitality. We are approximately 65-75% made of water with blood being 92% water, bones being 22% water & muscles being 75% made of water. It is the vital ingredient that our systems need to function at their best & affects everything from brain & organ function to temperature regulation. Water is life & next to oxygen is the most important thing that we as human beings consume to thrive & grow.

The various benefits that water brings to our bodies;

  • Regulates body temperature.
  • Protects body organs & tissues.
  • Helps dissolve minerals & nutrients, making them more accessible for the body to absorb.
  • Helps prevent constipation.
  • Carries nutrients & oxygen to cells.
  • Reduces burden on the kidneys & liver by flushing out waste.
  • Lubricates joints.
  • Aids digestion.
  • Regulates weight.

There are many more benefits than this as well. If you are looking to lose weight then drinking water is key. Did you know that when we do not drink enough water our bodies go into survival mode & starts behaving like a camel? In times of water famine our bodies shuttle the little water we have into our cells, specifically our fat cells causing excess weight gain. When you start drinking more the body comes out of survival mode & lets go of the water from the cells as it is no longer needed as it is getting a nice constant supply from the water that you are drinking.

Dehydration & it’s effect on the body.

In terms of exercise if we are not getting enough then muscle performance & growth is inhibited. Without enough water toxins cannot be expelled from the body causing them to be pushed & stored in fat cells. The body cannot release these fat cells until it is hydrated enough to get rid of these toxins.

More importantly than adverse fitness effects, dehydration is directly linked to fatigue, asthma & allergies, high blood pressure, skin disorders, high cholesterol, digestive issues, bladder & kidney problems, constipation, joint stiffness & premature ageing.

You also burn more calories when properly hydrated due to an elevated metabolism; Researchers estimate that a person who drinks 1.5 litres more water a day over a year year will burn an extra 17000 calories a year constituting 5 pounds.

Water before meals also can help us feel full & control portion sizes – Did you know that a lot of the time when you are hungry you are actually thirsty as the body provokes the same response?

Tips for water optimisation:

  • Drink a bare minimum in water of your bodyweight in kg x 0.033 or 6 to 8 pints or 3L a day.
  • Drink bottled water where possible as the purity is much higher then tap water & you avoid any added chemicals such as chlorine to keep the water sterilized. Too much chlorinated water can have the adverse affect of harming all of the useful bacteria in the digestive system.
  • There are numerous ways to treat tap water however to optimise it;
  • First filter the tap water through a Brita filter. This is not completely essential, as the charcoal will also filter the water.
  • Secondly keep the water in a large glass receptacle. Glass is better than plastic, as it has been shown that plastic can leak chemicals into the water. This can sometimes be tasted in the water. Here’s a link to a water dispenser:
  • Place two charcoal sticks into the water to act as a natural filter. These need to be recharged by boiling them after 3 months for a further 3 months of use. Charcoal sticks can be found by following this link:
  • Ice the water.
  • Add lemon & lime slices along with orange slices for a nice taste & boost of vitamin C.
  • Place the jug where it can get sunlight. This will help to ionise the water, which makes it alkaline & easier to absorb for the body.
  • There are more things that you can do to optimise water, particularly to ionise it. Ask me for more details.

A good mix that may help with fat flushing & is full of vitamin C is to prep a big container with a squeezed grapefruit, squeezed oranges or satsumas, mint, 1 cucumber, squeezed lemon juice & squeezed lime juice. This could be good if you find drinking water boring however you still want to drink clear water aside from this. To the left is an info graphic with some more ideas of how to spruce up your H2O.

What is Preferable for Hydration?

 The infographic below details a number of different drinks ascending from least hydrating to most hydrating. As can be seen, alkaline, ionized, filtered & activated water places towards the top of the funnel, being the best choice for you. By following the water optimization steps above you will bring the quality of your water close to this point. The funnel also details the acidity & alkalinity of certain drinks.

Our bodies function best in a slightly alkaline environment, that is our enzymatic, immunologic, and repair mechanisms all function their best in this alkaline range. Processed foods & drinks such as sodas, “diet” drinks, sports drinks & caffeinated drinks are acidic so by nature too much consumption will create an acidic environment within the body which hampers it’s function.

Beware of sugars & too much caffeine as these have the effect of provoking a stress response in the body by triggering the hormone cortisol, which in turn has many adverse affects on us. Too much sugar – especially in the hidden nature of a sports drink – can also lead to weight gain. Sugar is also hard on the teeth & caffeine acts as a diuretic when consumed in excess, which only serves to dehydrate us more.

If possible it is always best to try to drink toward the top of the funnel for the best health benefits.
